I studied the ontogenetic and evolutionary development of the cerebral cortex to understand the functional organization of the cerebral cortex. These studies I performed in the lab of Prof. Dr. E. Soriano at the University of Barcelona, Spain. The results of these investigation showed that early developmental rules shape the cerebral cortex.
After these studies, I explored the functional aspects of the visual system in awake, behaving monkeys. I started to perform these experiments as a post-doc in the group of Prof. Dr. V.A.F. Lamme, and later on as leader of the Vision and Cognition II Group at the NIN in Amsterdam. These studies showed that the visual area V1 has a role in cognitive processes, like perception and working memory.
Currently I am head of the VISCA group at the Psychology department of the UB. My lab investigates psychological and neural mechanims of the visual system using psychophysics, computational modelling, and fMRI/EEG recordings.

The cerebral cortex is part of the brain that hosts our cognitive capabilities, like perception, memory, and consciousness. It is a 2 mm thin sheet of densely packed neuronal cells, divided into layers and areas. Such an organization of the cerebral cortex is the basis of cortical functioning. To understand the complexity of the anatomical organization, I studied the development of the mouse cerebral cortex and explored the functional aspects in awake, behaving monkeys. Now my current research concentrates on building computational models of the cerebral circuits to reproduce cognitive behavior for future robots.
